The oldest grid in the city: Franklin St, Bellomy St, Lafayette St and the streets fanning out from the mission and the university, with houses from the 1900s to the 1920s let to students beside houses that have not changed hands in forty years.

The civic centre and the small downtown around it: City Hall, the library, restaurants and shops on Franklin St and Monroe St with offices on the floor above, and the Caltrain station with its surface lot and bike lockers.

The planned district north of US-101 around Rivermark Plaza: townhome rows and apartment blocks off Agnew Rd and Lick Mill Blvd, gated garages under the buildings, intercom panels at the street and a tenant population that turns over with hiring seasons.

The neighbourhoods around Central Park and the Kiely Blvd corridor between Homestead Rd and Benton St: single-storey ranch houses from the 1950s and 60s, side gates onto driveways, detached garages at the back, families who have been here for decades and families who arrived last summer.

The western flats between San Tomas Expressway and Lawrence Expressway: ranch houses on Bowers Ave, Cabrillo Ave and Pomeroy Ave, small two-storey apartment courts with a mailbox bank in the breezeway, and corner shops and restaurants along Homestead Rd.

The quiet southern neighbourhoods between Pruneridge Ave and Homestead Rd, near Kaiser Santa Clara and a short walk from Valley Fair: 1960s houses on curving streets, a large share of them rented out by families who moved away, and locks that were installed once and left.

The northern strip along Tasman Dr and Great America Pkwy: Levi's Stadium, California's Great America, the convention centre, hotels, corporate campuses behind badge readers, and parking structures that hold ten thousand cars on a game day and forty on a Tuesday.

The newest part of the city, along Lawrence Expressway, Scott Blvd and Bowers Ave north of 101: apartment blocks around Santa Clara Square, glass office buildings, small labs and startups in flex suites, and garages where more than half the cars have a proximity fob and no key.
