Wafer Lock & Key is a mobile locksmith for Santa Clara and the cities around it. The name does two jobs. A wafer is what the fabs and chip companies this city is built around start from, and a wafer lock is the mechanism inside most mailboxes, cabinets, desk drawers and older car doors, a stack of flat spring-loaded wafers instead of pins. The van services the second kind, and everything else that keeps a door shut. There is no shop, because a lock is not something you bring to a counter. The van carries what Santa Clara doors take: knob sets and deadbolts for the 1950s ranch houses in the flats, mortise parts for the older houses of the Old Quad, keypad and app locks for rentals, aluminum deadlatches and hookbolts for glass doors on El Camino Real, strike plates and jamb reinforcement, exit devices, readers, and blanks and programmers for most cars on the road, hybrids and EVs included. Calls are answered 24/7, nights, weekends and holidays.
Pricing is arranged so an engineer can check it. Every job carries an $89 service call, and it is counted inside the figure you agree to rather than appended at the end. A house lockout runs $115 to $199, a rekey $24 to $39 per cylinder, replacement hardware $109 to $299 per door, a car key $139 to $389. Arrival between 8pm and midnight adds $45 and between midnight and 7am adds $80, both stated inside the total before you say yes. Master key systems and access control are quoted in writing after the doors have been counted, because the cost depends on how many doors there are and who should open which. Once agreed, the figure is the figure on the card.
Coverage runs the full width of the city and past its edges. The Old Quad and Downtown and Franklin Street see the van in about 14 minutes, Central Park and Kiely 16, Killarney Farms and Forest Park 17, Rivermark and Bowers Park 18, Santa Clara Square and Lawrence 21, North Santa Clara and Tasman 22. Across the whole city the average is 21 minutes, which is what a flat grid with three expressways gets you. The exception is honest: on a game or concert day the Levi's Stadium and Great America lots run longer, and the window given on the call says so. Sunnyvale, Cupertino, San Jose, Milpitas and Campbell are served at the same figures, between 23 and 29 minutes.

Most cylinders open with picks, decoders or a bypass and keep working afterwards; drilling is a conversation, not a default.
